ReplyDeleteQuestion: What is the role of the Chorus in the action of Agamemnon? Are they passive or active characters?
A Greek chorus is a homogeneous, non-individualized group of performers in the plays of classical Greece, who comment with a collective voice on the dramatic action. The chorus consisted of the wisest, senior citizens in the city of Argos and they played a very active role in the play Agamemnon. The main role of the chorus was:
• Commentary
• Lend perspective
• Indirect Participation
The chorus is a plays a very important role in the play because they provide us with the commentary and narration of important context such as the background of the war between the soldiers of Troy and the soldiers of Argos most famously known as the Trojan War, the Chorus give us information on the abduction of Helen and they talk vividly about the ten years of war between the two nations of Greece and Troy.
Another instance where we get to know that the Chorus is of major importance and have a lot of authority is when they ask Clytemnestra as to why all the sacrifices were being made on the eve of Agamemnon coming back to Argos after war even though he had sacrificed their daughter, “Iphigenia.” The fact that the Chorus has the authority to question the deeds of someone as highly known in the city as the Queen- Clytemnestra, give us a clear picture of what kind of respect the Chorus had in the society and the also gives is us a glimpse of their authority and importance.
The chorus also has the right to debate, they have the right to deliberate themselves what is right and what is wrong, we get to know this in the scene where Aegisthus and Clytemnestra are successful in the assassination of Agamemnon.
The Chorus is a very powerful part of the Greek society and I feel that their role in the play is as important as that of Clytemnestra or Agamemnon. They are the main sources of narration in the play and this makes them extremely active characters in the play Agamemnon.
